To write a paper, mainly using your thoughts and ideas, it is important to give yourself enough time to go through the process of researching credible sources, reading and understanding the data and ideas, allowing those data/ideas to be assimilated into your experience and world-view (more on this below), piecing these outside sources together with your own ideas (more below), and writing from your point-of-view while incorporating outside sources to support your point-of-view. How to assimilate outside sources into your experience and world-view and piece sources together? After reading, ask yourself if their conclusions/data makes sense with what you have experienced or believe about the world… Did they miss an important factor? Was their study set up in a way that would give them the desired information? How do the sources either agree or disagree with each other? What do you think are the important issues/factors contributing to this topic? You can think of this process like putting together a big puzzle with pieces always missing…. At some point, you have to step back to take a look at the big picture… what do you see? Other people may see different things, but it’s important to support why you see it your way with the facts.
